Greetings from Lancaster High School!
My name is Dr. Kanesha Waites. I am the Director of Family Engagement and Behavior Support and organizer of an organization created to groom a large percentage of economically disadvantaged young ladies who exemplify poise, leadership and respect within their schools and communities. Due to the needs of the student body, I have recently began to host a series of events entitled, "Act Like a Lady; Think Like a Boss."
The Mission of Act Like a Lady; Think Like a Boss is to provide mentorship and guidance for young ladies looking to become their best selves. By giving young ladies an avenue to discuss important issues and experience new things, the lives of each of them will be enriched and empowered. Character building is at the crux of the holistic development of our students, and in its absence our lady's lack the skills to maximize their citizenship in our community.
WHAT WE DO:
Engage in conversations on real-world issues that are facing young women
Learn etiquette lessons that help us seamlessly adapt to different environments
Provide a support group to turn to when faced with challenges
Conduct community service with young girls in the community
Attend networking events/outings in the community and surrounding areas
Focus on building character and esteem in young ladies
Paying it forward through community service projects that give back to those in
As an employee of Lancaster Independent School District, I understand the lack of opportunities for mentorship that exist in Lancaster, TX. In an effort to fill the missing void, we have hosted several sessions covering good posture: projecting self confidence; poise and posture: the language of good posture; model look types; a guide to radiant skin care; social media 101; makeup 101; model walk 101; public speaking 101; future goals; types of modeling; waltz dancing; college and career savvy; entrepreneurship; health and wellness 101; dining etiquette; expressing yourself with color and style; relationships and reproductive health; female hygiene; money matters and wealth; nutrition and fitness and smart girls finish rich.
In addition to those sessions, many attended various outings like the Lancaster ISD Homecoming Parade; Strengthening Families Paying It Forward Community Service Projects: Fall Harvest Talent Show, Season Greetings Homeless Gift Giving, An Evening of Elegance: Valentine Dance in honor of Lancaster Parents, Prom Dress/Suit Giveaway for students in need during prom season, and the Moving on Special Education Ceremony and Dance; an opportunity to attend the Hidden Figures Movie Premiere; The Texas Alliance of Black School Educators: Dining with Divas Professional Networking Dinner. We also hosted a college tour in Houston, TX where the ladies were able to tour three universities (University of Houston, Texas Southern University, and Sam Houston State University). They also had the opportunity to tour New Orleans and host various fundraisers such as a Fundraiser Dance at Lancaster Middle School, a Fashion Show IB Project Presented by Debutante Kaevyn Maple “Let Girl’s Learn” Fundraiser and host a Panera Bread Fundraiser. The ladies were also afforded the opportunity to shoot their pictures at Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens. The ladies were sponsored the opportunity to attend the Queenish Annual Crowns & Gowns Gala and Fashion Show. They also hosted a Mother’s Day Brunch in honor of women they admired, and they participate in the districts Sister to Sister Panel Forum at Cedar Valley College to give back to younger students in LISD.
Though our work is just getting started, we have covered much ground and hopefully with your support we will be able to do even more for our ladies in the year to come! We are confident that the program is successful and can provide value to the young ladies of Lancaster ISD. All of the young ladies who successfully completed the 2016-2017 program, are now enrolled in college. If you are interested in supporting us in any of these opportunities for our young ladies, or if you have any further inquiry, please feel free to call me at (254) 718-8845 or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com.
